My Online Men's Group Therapy Services

At Suddenly Normal Psychotherapy, I offer an online interpersonal process group for men across California—a space where men come together to explore how they relate to others, gain insight into their behaviors, and experience authentic connection.

This isn’t a lecture or class. It’s a live, evolving group where real growth happens through interaction. As you share your experiences, express emotions, and receive honest, respectful feedback, you'll start to recognize patterns that show up in your relationships, inside and outside the group.

Many men come in struggling with stress, isolation, relationship difficulties, or questions about identity. But instead of tackling these topics one by one, the group helps you work through the underlying relational dynamics that affect every area of life.

Through this process, you’ll gain the tools to:

  • Communicate more clearly and confidently
  • Navigate conflict without hostility
  • Show up more fully in your relationships
  • Experience being supported and challenged in ways that foster growth

The group meets weekly via secure virtual sessions and is open to men across California.

What to Expect in Our Men’s Group

Our men’s therapy group isn’t just about talking—it’s about connecting. This interpersonal process group gives you the chance to explore how you relate to others in real time.

Members openly share thoughts, feelings, and behaviors within the group. Through honest feedback, respectful disagreement, and genuine support, you'll begin to notice your patterns and practice new, more effective ways of relating.

This group is a space for:

  • Healing past relationship wounds
  • Practicing assertiveness and vulnerability
  • Receiving constructive feedback
  • Navigating conflict in healthier ways

It’s a rare chance to experience the kind of support, challenge, and repair that many people never received in their families or early relationships.

Life presents us with various challenges, and seeking support is a courageous step toward overcoming them. At Suddenly Normal Psychotherapy, I specialize in addressing a range of common issues, offering compassionate guidance and evidence-based strategies to help you navigate through life's complexities.

Here are some of the common issues that I help men with through my group therapy for men near me in California. This list is not all-inclusive, so feel free to reach out and contact me to discuss your situation specifically:

Common Men's Issues I Address in Men's Group Therapy

  • Relationship Challenges

Navigating relationships, both romantic and platonic, can be complex, and men often face unique communication and intimacy issues. My sessions offer a space to openly explore communication challenges, intimacy issues, and emotional disconnect, helping you grow stronger connections with others.

  • Stress & Anxiety

Many men experience stress and anxiety due to various factors such as work pressures, relationship challenges, or societal expectations. My support group provides a safe space where you can share experiences and learn from others. Together, we develop effective coping strategies to manage symptoms and build lasting resilience.

  • Fatherhood & Parenting

Whether you're a new dad, a single father, or parenting in a partnership, you’ll find valuable support here. We explore parenting stressors and strategies with others in similar roles. For those parenting neurodivergent children, I also offer autism parent support groups.

  • Marriage/Partner Problems

It's completely normal to encounter periods of tension, miscommunication, or emotional distance. In my men's group therapy, we tackle these dynamics head-on, providing a supportive space where you can talk openly about the challenges you're experiencing.

  • Self-Identity & Masculinity

Exploring and understanding your sense of self and masculinity can be an important part of your mental health journey. My men's group therapy sessions provide a safe and supportive space for you to explore your identity, develop a healthier sense of self, and foster personal growth.

  • Life Changes & Transitions

From career shifts and divorce to grief and mid-life crises, I help men process life transitions in empowering ways. You’ll gain tools to manage uncertainty and redefine your goals with intention.

  • Substance Abuse & Addiction

Struggling with substance abuse or addiction can feel overwhelming, but you don't have to face it alone. My men's group therapy sessions can help. By connecting with others who are facing similar challenges, you can share experiences, gain strength, and develop strategies to build a healthier, more fulfilling life.

  • Sex & Intimacy

Sex and intimacy are important aspects of relationships, but they can also be sources of stress and conflict. My group therapy sessions can help you navigate issues related to sex and intimacy. By discussing these topics openly with others, you can gain new insights and strategies to build a more fulfilling connection with your partner.

Let's navigate the best course for your life.

Men's Virtual Group Therapy FAQs

  • Do I Have to Talk During My First Men's Group Therapy Session?

No — and there's no expectation that you will. Many men who join my online men's support group spend the first session or two mostly listening, getting a feel for the room and the other members before they start to open up. That's a completely valid way to begin. When you're ready to share, you'll share. Group therapy for men works best when participation feels genuine, not forced, so I'll never put you on the spot.

  • Is This Men's Group Therapy or a Men's Support Group?

It's therapist-facilitated men's group therapy, not a peer-led men's support group. While both have value, there's a meaningful difference. A men's support group is typically a space where members share and offer encouragement to one another. My online men's group therapy is structured, clinically guided, and rooted in evidence-based interpersonal process work. As the licensed therapist in the room, I help shape the conversation, surface patterns, and ensure feedback is constructive — so you're getting more than camaraderie. You're getting therapeutic change.

  • What Happens If I Miss a Men's Group Therapy Session?

Life happens, work runs late, kids get sick, things come up. If you need to miss a session, just let me know in advance when possible. Consistency does matter in group work because the relationships between members are part of what drives growth, but missing an occasional session won't set you back. We'll touch base and keep you connected to what the group is working through.

  • What Men's Therapy Group Topics Do You Cover?

Each session is shaped by what members bring to the room, but common men's therapy group topics include stress and burnout, anger and emotional regulation, identity and masculinity, relationship and marriage challenges, fatherhood, work pressure, self-worth, grief, substance use, and intimacy. You're also encouraged to bring up what's on your mind in any given week. The strength of an interpersonal process group is that it follows real life — so the topics evolve with the men in it.

  • Is My Online Men's Support Group Confidential?

Yes. Confidentiality is a top priority. All participants agree to respect one another’s privacy, and sessions are held on a secure virtual platform.

  • I've Never Done Therapy Before — Is Online Men's Group Counseling a Good Starting Point?

Yes — and you're far from alone in that. A lot of the men I work with have never set foot in a therapist's office before joining my online men's group. In some ways, a group can be an easier entry point than individual work: you're not under a spotlight, you can move at your own pace, and you get to learn from how other men work through similar struggles. It's a low-pressure way to find out what therapy actually feels like, with a licensed clinician guiding the way.

  • What's the Difference Between Men's Group Therapy and Individual Therapy for Men?

Individual therapy is one-on-one, while group therapy allows you to connect with others who are navigating similar experiences. Both offer valuable insights, and many clients benefit from doing both.

  • Can I Join Men's Group Therapy if I'm Already Seeing an Individual Therapist?

Yes. Group therapy can complement individual sessions and offer additional perspectives and community support.

  • What's the Next Step if I'm Interested in Joining the Men's Group?

Fill out the men's group therapy intake form on this page and I'll follow up to schedule a brief consultation. We'll talk through what you're hoping to get out of group, answer any questions you have, and make sure it's the right fit before you commit. No pressure — just a conversation.

  • Who Is Online Men's Group Therapy in California Best Suited For?

This online men's group is built for adult men across California who want more than surface-level conversation — guys who are willing to look honestly at their patterns, hear feedback, and do the work. It's especially well-suited for men dealing with relationship friction, emotional shutdown, life transitions, identity questions, isolation, or the quiet sense that something needs to change. You don't need to be in crisis to benefit. Plenty of members join because they're functional on the outside but want a deeper, more connected life on the inside.

  • Do You Offer In-Person Men's Therapy in San Diego or San Marcos?

No — all of my men's therapy in San Diego, San Marcos, and the rest of California is delivered online. While I'm based in San Marcos (in northern San Diego County), I don't see clients in person. Every session — individual or group — is held over a secure virtual platform. This means you can join from anywhere in California: San Diego, Los Angeles, the Bay Area, the Central Valley, or a small town most people haven't heard of. The clinical work is the same; the commute disappears.

  • How Is Online Therapy for Men in California Different from In-Person Group Work?

Honestly, less different than people expect. The therapeutic process — the noticing, the feedback, the relational work — translates well to a virtual setting. What changes is the access. An online men's support group means men from across California can be in the same room without anyone driving across the county. It also tends to feel more sustainable long-term, because attendance doesn't hinge on traffic, parking, or geography. For most men, the virtual format becomes invisible after a session or two.

  • How Many Men Are in Each Group, and How Long Are Sessions?

I keep the male group therapy intentionally small so every member has room to be seen and heard — typically a small, closed group rather than a drop-in format. Sessions run weekly and last about 90 minutes. The size and structure are designed to build trust over time, so the group becomes a place where real relational patterns can show up, be noticed, and shift.

  • Will Insurance Cover Men's Group Therapy?

It depends on your plan. Some PPO plans reimburse for group psychotherapy under out-of-network mental health benefits, and I can provide a superbill for you to submit. I'd recommend calling your insurance company and asking specifically about coverage for outpatient group psychotherapy (CPT code 90853) with an out-of-network provider. We can also walk through pricing and options together during the consultation.

  • What Should I Do if I Searched for "Therapy for Men Near Me" but Live Outside San Marcos?

You're still in the right place if you're anywhere in California. A lot of the men I work with originally searched "therapy for men near me" or "men's support group online" looking for someone close by, and ended up choosing virtual therapy because the right clinical fit mattered more than zip code. As long as you're a California resident, you can join the men's group regardless of which city you're in.

  • What Kind of Therapeutic Approach Do You Use in the Men's Group?

The group is built around interpersonal process therapy — an evidence-based approach where the relationships between group members become the primary vehicle for change. Instead of working through a curriculum or set agenda, we pay close attention to what unfolds between members in real time: how you show up, how others respond, what gets stirred up, what gets avoided. I draw on psychodynamic, relational, and trauma-informed frameworks to help you make sense of those patterns and try new ways of relating.

  • How Long Do Men Typically Stay in the Group?

There's no fixed endpoint — men stay as long as the work is meaningful. Some members commit to a defined stretch of a few months to address a specific issue; others stay considerably longer because the group becomes a steady source of growth and accountability. We'll check in periodically about your goals and how things are progressing, so the decision about when to wrap up is always intentional, never accidental.

  • What if I'm Nervous About Joining a Men's Group Counseling Setting?

That's one of the most common things men tell me before they start — and it's a completely reasonable response. Most men were never taught how to be open with other men, so the idea of doing it on purpose, on camera, can feel exposing. The intake call is partly there to address that. We'll talk through what's making you hesitate, what the first session actually looks like, and how I structure the group to make showing up feel doable. The discomfort tends to ease faster than people expect once they meet the other men.
